VPN Connection issue in Windows 10 [Solved]

VPN Connection issue in Windows 10

Error Can’t connect to VPN

Getting error while configuring VPN connection in Windows 10
The remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination you provided is not recognized or the selected authentication protocol is not permitted on the remote access server.

Solution Connecting to VPN server configured in Windows server 2003 was not an issue till Windows 8.1. Now connecting from Windows 10 client to the VPN server configured in Windows 2003 server is showing error.

The remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination you provided is not recognized, or the selected authentication protocol is not permitted on the remote access server”.

After some research I found issue with the CHAP and MS-CHAP V2 is used in VPN Server configured in Windows Server 2003 and creating a new VPN connection from Windows 10 its not using CHAP and MS-CHAP V2 protocol by default.

Here is the some steps to create a new VPN connection from Windows 10 client connecting to VPN server configured in Windows Server 2003.

Step 1 – Click on Start – Go to Setting

Step – 8 – Now you can connect from Windows 10 client to VPN Server configured In Windows Server 2003.

Windows 10 client by default does not use this CHAP and MS-CHAP V2 protocol setting, so you will get the above error connecting VPN to the VPN Server configured in Windows Server 2003.

Hope the above steps will help to resolve the issue… 🙂

    • i have received the notification by email, i have an issue with VPN in windows 10. when i tried to install, it says ” The network connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be established because the remote server is not responding. This could be because one of the network devices (e.g, firewalls, NAT, routers, etc) between your computer and the remote server is not configured to allow VPN connections. Please contact your Administrator or your service provider to determine which device may be causing the problem. i cant see the internet options in the vpn menu as shown above.. help me to solve this…

  1. Durga,

    Thank you so much !

    Good Gawd Gurdy…

    FYI:
Had to go to the Control Panel to get the Internet Options. Internet Options was not showing on my VPN settings page.

  2. I want to thank you for such a well written article explaining the problem as well as the solution! It grinds me that Microsoft doesn’t think of these things – and their technet community was a waste, suggesting the router is the problem. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  3. I followed the steps, but I am not sure if I did it right. I am using ZenMate, and instead of using Microsoft built-in I did it under ZenMate, and I am still getting that error.

  4. Hi Roggie, Sorry to listen that you are still getting the error after doing all the above steps… Seems something missing which will be fixed soon.
Can you please share the error screenshot what exactly you are getting…

    • Hi Durga.
After I do what you suggested I’m still experiencing the same problem.
I hope you can help with this issue.
Let me know if you need any other information.

      Thank you.

  5. Hi, after following all the steps and trying to connect, I am getting this error,

“The remote connection was not made because the VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the security parameters required for IPsec negotiation might not be configured properly.”

ANYBODY TELL ME HOW TO RESOLVE THIS??

  6. Hey buddy.
I finally got this computer connected to the vpn. Now I need to access a shared folder in the service and I have no idea what to do.
    I’ll appreciate any help.

    Thank you.

    • Hi Reggie.. Nice to hear from you that you are able to connect to VPN now.
And to access a shared folder, Please do share a folder in the machine with everyone permission else if you have specific user access…
then from your machine run window can try \\yourip
let say the ip is 66.249.79.11 then in run type \\66.249.79.11
then put user name and password to connect … Thanks

  7. Reggie,

The easiest way is to right click start, select run and type there the ip address or computer name as follow: \\000.000.000.000 or \\computername

Maybe it will ask you for user credentials you have in the computer you are trying to connect to.

    Good luck!

  9. I tried what you suggested and I still cannot connect. All Windows 7 laptops can connect but not Windows 10 Pro laptops. I get the error “The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN Server might be unreachable.” I can verify Windows 7 PCs have no problems connecting.

  11. AMAZING! Thank you!!! Suggestion to others = read carefully and ensure in the original VPN setup as well as the “Internet” place outlined above all information is correct. My domain name was different in each place. Read carefully, follow the CHAP allowed step (but do not check the automatically use Windows and login name).

    Finally! Fixed! Thank you!!!

  12. I did what you told me to do from guide and I still got the same problem. The remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination you provided is not recognized or the selected authentication protocol is not permitted on the remote access server.

  13. I followed the above steps, but now getting this error msg as below
“Theremote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the security parameters required for IPsec negotiation might not be configured properly.”
Please suggest what changes I could make. Thanks!

  14. Hi Durga! I was connected normally to VPN when all of a sudden it got disconnected and i can’t connect again (When i connected first time i followed the instructions that my provider gave me). Even after creating my self a VPN Connection following your commands i still get the same problem: The remote connection was not made because the attepted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the security parameters required for IPsec negotiation might not be configured properly. Any help?

  15. I have tried above options but still not able to accomplish this. Can you share your phone no. so that I can call you directly?

  16. Hello there sir! Your guide helped me after weeks of not able to connect to VPN!
Thank you for sharing and may you have a bountiful future in your career.

    • Hi Roger
      Good day …
I do want to know if you are also connecting to the same VPN and its working without any issue?
then try with other internet connection, sometimes VPN throws wired error due to restriction on the specific ISP.
      Let me know..

  18. HI All

Same thing on my Boss laptop

The remote connection was not made because the attepted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable
I have tried the above and also uninstalled and reinstalled the WAN miniport. Then it worked for a while and now it does not work again. Do you think it could be Windows? I am not in favour of Reloading Windows at all as he is very difficult type of person.

    Please advise
